Winter Mountain Skills Courses

Courses for the Winter Environment

Next course is our Welsh Winter Walking 1 day intro – £35pp

A one day introduction to Winter walking. This course is ideally suited to those who may be thinking of venturing into the mountains in Winter for the first time or those who have sampled Welsh Winter walking but would like more information and guidance on how to plan, navigate and choose the right clothing and equipment for Winter walking before Winter truly arrives. An hour indoors will cover the theory and also where we look at the different types of boots, clothing and equipment we use in Winter. If you already have Winter boots and crampons then bring them along and we can make sure they fit properly! We’ll then move out onto the mountains for a day’s walk where we will look at the practical side of Winter walking. An ideal course to prepare for Winter. This course is not dependant on snow but it would be nice if we had some!! £35pp

Venturing out into the winter mountain environment brings different challenges to summer conditions. Not only does the weather tend to be more harsh but the physical demands are also greater so staying warm and having the energy to finish your walk can sometimes be the greatest challenge. Winter also brings different rewards with the weather allowing us to see our countryside in ever changing conditions. Nature can still blossom in wintry conditions and wildlife still makes an appearance, despite the severe environment in which it lives.

To enable us to enjoy the hills and mountains safely in winter a basic set of skills and knowledge are required. Our winter skills courses are split into two courses, the one day beginner course and the two day improver. Wherever possible we will endeavour to run our courses in Snowdonia but we also travel to the Lake District and Scotland over the winter period.

A typical one day beginner winter skills course will consist of the following:

  1. Meet and greet (indoors)
  2. Discuss equipment, clothing, weather, emergency procedures and navigation. Avalanche awareness and planning of winter walking will also be covered.
  3. Correct fitting of crampons, intro to ice axe and safety equipment for both personal and group use
  4. A journey into the winter mountain environment including practical use of crampons and ice axe.
  5. Return for debrief and course finishes around 5pm

A typical 2 day improver winter skills course will consist of the following:

  1. All elements included in the 1 day winter skills course
  2. Greater emphasis on winter planning, avalanche awareness and route choice
  3. Practical uses of winter navigational techniques including use of different types of maps
  4. A journey into the winter mountain environment
  5. Return for debrief and course finishes around 5pm

Note: An additional evening session/lecture will be made available for the 2 day course to cover some winter skills in more detail.

All our instructors are local, fully qualified for the course they are responsible for, fully insured and qualified first aiders
