The recent winter conditions in the mountains of the UK, have been mixed to say the least. With short periods of snowfall, fewer prolonged periods of freezing levels and heavy rainfall and thawing of the snowpack, it has been challenging to predict good winter conditions so as to run winter skills courses. Add to this more stormy weather including ferocious winds and flooding then safety of clients and ourselves becomes even more important.
So we decided to head up to Scotland for a social weekend with friends and scope out some less familiar terrain around Crianlarich. The weather again was against us with Storm Dennis forecasted to arrive over the weekend. Good planning and route choice gave us an excellent first day reaching An Casteil and returning via Stob Glas whilst Coire Gabhail gave us shelter from the wind on the second day but no respite from the rain which brought severe flooding. Still a great weekend away with an opportunity to refresh personal skills such as winter navigation, planning and walking over unfamiliar terrain.
