Snowdon winter skills

We opted for the Llanberis path for a day out with Brandon, Mike and Daniel to look at winter walking skills together with foundation mountain skills. The snow line was still relatively low which meant our walk in gave us opportunities to discuss winter kit, navigation, route choice and weather. The Snowdon Mountain Railway maintenance team were out and it was nice to see the train going up to low levels at this time of year when the normal train service and cafe is obviously closed. We ventured up higher and found good deep pockets of snow to practise using ice axe and crampons and the weather on descent offered us a reminder of why it's essential to have good winter skills and clothing so to be able to look after onself on the mountains in winter. To finish the day we went to Pen y Ceunant Cafe to discuss navigation in more detail over tea, bara brith and lentil soup. A great winter's day out!
